Navigating the Postpartum Journey: a Personal Insight
A Podcast About Postpartum
Motherhood is a transformative journey filled with highs, lows, and everything in between. In my show “my postpartum podcast”, we delve into these experiences together. I'm Jaz, a doula, mom of two, and now a podcast host. Each episode, accompanied by a guest, we venture into the often untold stories of postpartum life, with the goal of breaking stigmas, celebrating one another and embracing the sisterhood and community that arise from sharing our unique journeys.
Why This Podcast?
This first episode introduces you to me, my story, and the motivation behind creating this podcast. During my first pregnancy, I was unprepared for the significant life changes that followed. It wasn't just the obvious shifts but the subtle, myriad ways in which everything changed. I realised, hearing other women’s stories could have helped me set realistic expectations, minimizing the shock and confusion I felt postpartum.
Bridging the Gap
The gap between birth and postpartum is often vast and overwhelming. My podcast aims to bridge this divide by providing a platform for women to share their firsthand postpartum experiences. This sharing, I believe, is akin to the wisdom our ancestors would have passed through closer communities. It's about recognizing the interlinked nature of birth and postpartum and preparing ourselves better for this transition.
My Postpartum Story
My postpartum experiences, with two children under two years of age, were starkly different. The first, following a traumatic hospital birth, was isolating and challenging. I felt immense pressure to breastfeed and barely managed to sleep especially in those first few days and weeks. This, compounded by postpartum rage, eventually resulted in a stay at a mom and baby unit for mental health support. However, my second postpartum journey was a vastly different story. After a beautiful and empowering free birth at home, my postpartum period was more serene and supported. I had learned to manage anxiety and received invaluable support from a perinatal mental health team, which made all the difference.
Embracing Imperfection
A recurring theme in my journey has been the struggle with perfection. Initially, I aimed to be a perfect mother, leading to unnecessary stress and feelings of failure. I’ve since learned that embracing imperfection and accepting ourselves and our emotions opens up more space for love and patience.
Parenthood is challenging but rewarding, and by sharing our stories, we foster a supportive community. That’s what this podcast aims to achieve—offering a platform for collective learning and empathy.
